About ASME Learning and Development (L&D)

Technology impacts how we work. Engineers must make a concerted effort to advance and stay current in a rapidly shifting field, especially related to practicality and application, with new approaches to learning.
Engineers of all experience levels require learning and development solutions to stay on top of advanced engineering technologies with a commitment to educating every level of the workforce.
We are rethinking and redesigning our suite of educational technology solutions to serve 21st century engineers.
Our approach is simple, we believe we can fight the skills gap by:
  1. Harnessing today’s world class subject matter experts and instructors’ experience, knowledge, and stories, and converting that into scalable, engaging learning experiences.
  2. Developing practical learning that engages a multigenerational workforce.
  3. Ensuring our learners can apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities on the job.
  4. Expanding our support of curriculum enhancing technical AND critical engineering essentials, such as complex decision-making and critical thinking.
The next major changes in engineering are happening now. Are you and your colleagues ready? Join us on our quest to fight the engineering skills gap.
Investing in continuing learning and development helps engineers stay ahead of rapidly advancing engineering technology and improve their employers’ results. Maximize your efforts by building a business case and strategic plan to create value.
Proving ROI in any investment can be challenging, particularly when the evidence for learning is less tangible than, for example, the purchase of a profitable 3D printer in a manufacturing plant. Prove learning ROI for you and your team with these 5 tips.

Our Learning Experiences

In all our learning experiences, we aim to apply Universal Design for Learning principles, improve learner centricity, leverage learning science and instructional design principles while building new and revised products. We maintain International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) accreditation and provide CEUs to learners if/when appropriate. Our team follows an agile approach to course development that allows for quick response to customer needs, feedback from learners, and an environment of rapid development and testing.
In order to ensure a high quality product and maintain accuracy of content, ASME’s Learning & Development department reviews courses on a regular basis by evaluating course surveys and engaging with our world class subject matter experts and instructors to implement any pertinent updates and changes. We stay responsive to major changes, such as updated standards or major technology advancements in industry.
Our instructors and subject matter experts are practicing engineers, professionals, researchers, and academics who can bring you examples and case studies from the real world. Whether in class or online, their expertise is delivered to you via our courses online or onsite.

ASME Virtual Classroom

ASME Virtual Classroom is designed to be easy for learners and instructors to access, but we understand that, as with all technology, issues do sometimes arise.

Make sure you’re logged into the correct ASME account

Make sure that you’re signed into the account used to purchase the class. This will be the account tied to the email address that received a confirmation notice for the class.

Check for your confirmation email: The confirmation email you received after purchasing the course will contain a link to the Virtual Classroom.
If you see this message when trying to access a class, this means that the instructor has not started the live session.

Check the class time: You should receive email calendar invites for the live sessions. If your Upcoming Sessions list and the email calendar invite times do not match, please reply back to us directly to resolve. The email calendar invites are the correct times.
Make sure your device’s audio is on. If you're still having trouble hearing the instructor, make sure that your device’s sound has been turned on.

Test your audio and video on Zoom.

Consult Zoom’s support center: Zoom's support center can also help you fix audio issues. This article provides a list of common audio fixes from Zoom: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/204484835-My-Audio-is-Not-Working-on-iOS-or-Android

Learner safety is our top priority. Our instance of Zoom uses x-bit encryption. Our meetings rooms use a waiting room. Only students on the attendance list will be admitted into the class. Visit the Zoom page for security.
Many issues can be resolved by restarting one or more of the tools. If you’re having trouble, we ask that you try these steps before reporting a problem to ASME.
  • Quit and restart your browser
  • Log out and re-log in to ASME’s Learning Portal
  • Quit Unrelated applications: The more programs that are running on your computer, the slower it will run. Make sure to close out old programs and unnecessary browser windows, as these can slow down your computer and prevent it from connecting to the classroom.
  • Check your internet speed: A suggested minimum speed for reliable video chat is 1 Mbps for both upload and download. You can test your internet speed at speedtest.net.
  • Restart your computer
ASME Virtual Classroom is an online learning experience where student cohorts and instructors participate in real-time, interactive virtual sessions. It includes a mix of learner interactions (such as video presentations, discussion boards, and live Q&A) and self-study resources before, during, and after live sessions...with convenience of not having to travel – or even leave your home!
If you have been enrolled into a Virtual Classroom course due to your course being cancelled, we will automatically convert and apply your credit toward your virtual classroom session, without any additional effort from you. If you had not previously enrolled, or if you’d like to enroll an additional learner into the course, please contact us at learningexperience@asme.org.
We maintain our IACET accreditation, and have built our virtual classroom courses so that you will earn the same credit (PDHs and/or CEUs) that you would have in your originally scheduled in-person course.
Depending on the course, recordings of the live sessions may be available. Reach out to us at learningexperience@asme.org to find out if your course will have recordings available. If so, you can watch these at your convenience and still earn your course credit.
We share your concern about long, interrupted stretches of screen time, and our instructors organize their Virtual Classroom courses accordingly – by building in interactive discussions, breakout groups, Q&A and by providing scheduled breaks.
Students are telling us that the Virtual Classroom experience is every bit as valuable as our traditional in-person classes, and so they are offered at roughly the same tuition. As with other programs, we do sometimes offer discounts, so be on the lookout.
Course material is distributed electronically, available on the ASME Learning Management System before, during and after the Virtual Classroom (details vary by class).
