Senate Votes to Confirm OSTP Nominee

The Senate voted on March 25th to confirm the nomination of Mr. Michael Kratsios to be Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Kratsios, who has served as the U.S. Chief Technology Officer in the last Trump administration, received bipartisan support in the Senate, with a final vote of 74-25.

During his nomination hearing at the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Kratsios outlined his vision for OSTP, emphasizing the importance of U.S. leadership in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and 5G infrastructure. He also highlighted the need for continued investment in research and development to maintain American competitiveness on the global stage. Senators questioned him on a range of topics, including the administration’s approach to federal research funding, scientific integrity, and efforts to ensure the United States remains at the forefront of innovation.

The OSTP plays a critical role in shaping national science and technology policy, coordinating federal research efforts, and advising the President on key scientific issues. Kratsios’s nomination comes at a time when federal research agencies are navigating budgetary constraints and evolving policy priorities that could impact the broader STEM enterprise.
