ASME Advanced Clean Energy Summit (ACES) Webinar Episode V: Decarbonizing with Large Scale Energy Storage

In preparation for the Advanced Clean Energy Summit (ACES) 2020, ASME is convening clean energy infrastructure experts on June 3, 2020 at 12:00pm EST for a webinar on why large-scale energy storage is needed to support expansion of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE). Dispatchable, long-duration storage that is cost-effective at utility-scale will accelerate decarbonization, while enhancing flexibility and reliability of the electric grid. Appropriately located storage can also facilitate deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and mitigate grid congestion.

In this webinar, Bill Conlon, founder and President of Pintail Power LLC, will discuss the drivers of long-duration, large-scale energy storage as well as key figures of merit for evaluating storage characteristics including cost, performance, scalability, siting and sustainability. The ASME PTC-53 Performance Test Code for Energy Storage Systems—currently in draft form—will be presented as a framework to quantify and compare charging and discharging processes and alternative storage media.

Dr. Conlon will also describe several energy storage systems including hybrids that integrate directly with generation relative to their figures of merit. The performance of the Liquid Salt Combined Cycle™ (LSCC) developed by Pintail Power will be used as an example to illustrate relevant aspects of PTC-53 and implications for vendors, engineers and owners of Energy Storage Systems.
