Lester K. Su Named ASME’s 144th President

ASME has named Dr. Lester K. Su as its 144th President, recognizing his long-standing contributions to the engineering profession and the ASME community. Dr. Su began his policy work through the ASME Federal Government Fellows program, serving in the office of Representative Vernon Ehlers of Michigan from 2000 to 2001. During that time, he helped bring technical expertise to policy discussions on Capitol Hill, building a foundation for his ongoing engagement in public service.

Since then, Dr. Su has remained active in ASME, holding roles such as Chair of the Committee on Government Relations, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Outreach, and member of the Board of Governors. He currently teaches mechanical engineering as a Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University. Dr. Su is the 11th former Federal Fellow to be named ASME President, and the fourth consecutive one to hold the position. This trend highlights the value of the fellowship program in preparing engineers for leadership at the intersection of technology and public policy.

ASME’s Federal Government Fellows program continues to offer engineers meaningful opportunities to contribute to public policy and expand their professional reach. For those looking to apply their expertise beyond the lab or classroom, the fellowship remains a strong path toward leadership.
