Apprenticeships See Big Boost in Federal Support

Apprenticeships and workforce development are seeing a big boost in federal support this Congress. Along with the White House’s recent Executive Order that calls on the Secretaries of Labor, Commerce and Education to “reach and surpass 1 million new active apprentices,” Congress is now following suit with the introduction of legislation to support apprenticeships.

Representatives Dwight Evans and Chuck Edwards recently introduced H.R. 3681, the Leveraging Educational Opportunities Network (LEON) Act. The legislation calls for the Department of Commerce to provide federal funding through government grants to organizations that team up with employers locally to provide professional training to workers in fields such as manufacturing.

In a similar vein, Rep Luz Rivas recently introduced H.R. 4048, which calls on the Director of the National Science Foundation to award government grants to certain programs that provide apprenticeships in STEM fields. In addition, the bill calls for the establishment of an interagency task force to report on specific Federal Government programs that focus on STEM training, career development, and other purposes.
