Humans have harnessed the wind since antiquity, using it to propel sailing ships, mill grains, and power pumps to move water and drain land. One of the most well-known applications are Dutch windmills, used to pump water from the low countryside and to rivers beyond the system of dikes. At one time the Netherlands had some 10,000 working windmills. Over the last 100 to 150 years, people saw the potential to generate electricity from the wind, building enough momentum that today wind power is the fastest growing segment of electricity generation. This quiz will test your knowledge on the development of wind power.
