Leveraging ASME’s deep history with the B31 Code, we have built the Practical Piping Design learning path with a focus on the complex decision making and critical thinking required to safely and properly design piping through applied learning in real-world situations. The series of four eLearning courses is relevant to the application of B31.3 code, with a specific focus on the design of piping systems.
 
Learners engaged in this learning path have the opportunity to think critically about real-world scenarios and case studies as they walk through sections of B31.3 and learn to safely and properly design piping systems according to the world-renowned ASME standard.
 
Over-reliance on software without a fundamental understanding of the underlying principles of engineering has become a common industry issue, proving that the “garbage in, garbage out” adage still holds true even with the advent of advanced software. The courses intentionally focus on developing problem-solving and complex decision-making skills related to piping design without the use of software.
 
The learning path covers the core knowledge required to effectively and efficiently design a piping system, including engineering essentials (foundational skills), and B31.3 Code knowledge.
 
By completing this learning path, you will learn how to successfully:

  • Read and interpret the B31.3 Code
  • Safely design piping
  • Think critically through problems and make complex piping design decisions without the use of software
  • Use formulas and pressure/temperature tables to calculate complex design criteria

Course Developer

Jim E. Meyer, P.E., has over 40 years of experience in refining petrochemical, chemical, power generation, and industrial facilities. He is a principal engineer at Louis Perry and Associates, a full-service engineering and architectural firm, located in Wadsworth, Ohio.
 
Jim is experienced in overall project coordination/management, pressure equipment, piping design, analysis, specifications, support design, mechanical system requirements, and documentation requirements. In particular, his technical expertise includes ASME piping and pressure vessel codes, stress analysis, field troubleshooting piping system support, vibration, and expansion problems.
 
As a member of ASME, he has been involved in the ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 Section committees for over 35 years. He is currently Chair of the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Section Committee, Chair of the ASME B31 Standards Committee, and serves on the ASME Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards. Jim has also served as Chair of ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code Section Committee.
 
Jim currently teaches several ASME public and master classes. In the 7 years he has been teaching for ASME, he has taught over 100 courses to more than 600 learners in 20 countries.
 
Most recently, he co-authored chapters in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Companion Guide, 4th Edition, covering the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code and the B31.3 Process Piping Code. Past projects and work experience involved major oil refineries, petrochemical plants, fossil, nuclear, solar and alternative energy generation, as well as cryogenic and vacuum test facilities.
