The ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard is considered as the authoritative guideline for the design language of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and is essential in ensuring that drawing information and symbols are being interpreted and communicated properly. Establishing uniform practices for stating and interpreting GD&T on engineering drawings and related documents is a critical component of the manufacturing process. These good design best practices are directly related to a product’s innovation, beauty and success.
This official ASME learning path, comprised of three self-study eLearning courses accessible via ASME’s Learning Hub, is based on the latest ASME Y14.5 Standard and makes GD&T concepts easy to learn and apply.
The Y14.5-2018 Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Overview course allows a high-level overview of the contents of the ASME Y14.5 - 2018 Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standard. The information in this Standard shows standardized methods for applying dimensions and tolerances through a language of letters, numbers, and special symbols.
The Drawing Interpretation (GD&T) course covers the majority of information required to understand basic mechanical two-dimensional engineering drawings. It includes quizzes, drawing assignments and a drawing packet showing five detail drawings and an assembly drawing for the parts of a Trolley Wheel.
The ASME Y14.5-2018 - GD&T Fundamentals (On Demand) course provides the skills needed to interpret engineering designs and help troubleshoot mistakes that occur during the manufacturing process. It features video-based sessions and real-world examples taught by ASME’s expert Instructor including several case studies based on industry standards, with example calculations and interactive quizzes.
By participating in this learning path, you will learn how to successfully:
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the fundamental geometric concepts and the topics contained in the ASME Y14.5 Standard
- Interpret and explain the application of geometric symbols on drawings
- Explain how to properly select the datum reference frames
- Calculate the position and profile tolerances
- Recognize the role that drawings play in product realization
- Describe the fundamentals of drawing interpretation
- Identify drawing elements, including part views and sections
- Describe general dimensions and tolerances
- Explain how to present surface texture, fasteners and welding

Who should attend?
Designers, approvers/decision makers, vendors and suppliers, and personnel who need to read and/or interpret engineering drawings and their intent. Staff involved in engineering, designing, drafting, quality control, procurement, tooling, production, purchasing, costing, manufacturing, routing in the shop, CAD inspection, and those who want to learn more about geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and the ASME Y14.5 Standard.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued to registrants who successfully complete each course in this GD&T training learning path.
