Ethics for Engineers: Doing the Right Thing When No One is Looking

Ethics has been defined as doing the right thing when no one is looking. Are you? Is everyone around you? What should you do if they’re not? Is what you think is right - the same thing as what others think is right? Use the words “code of ethics” with 10 people and you’ll get ten variations just on what it means to behave ethically.

This course introduces learners to professional ethics and the forces that shape engineering ethics including its history, the ASME code of ethics of engineers, current engineering ethics and when and where ethical values are developed. The course explains how to identify ethical concerns both in and outside of the workplace, to recognize factors that modify ethical values, and to provide solutions to ethical problems.

By participating in this course, you will learn how to successfully:

• Develop a picture of what ethical behavior looks like
• Employ steps to solve ethical dilemmas
• Cultivate ideas for what to do if you or someone is not behaving in a manner consistent with ethical behavior
