Whether you are currently a supervisor or aspiring to become one, learning to engage and communicate with today’s workforce is one of the most critical skills for your continued success in managing engineering professionals and technical teams. Further, a person’s relationship with their manager is the largest reason employees remain at companies, or worse, leave companies. There are an infinite number of variables between a manager and employee, the goal of a strong manager is to reduce the number of variables which increases the chances of success and employee engagement and retention. This Virtual Classroom course will help you, the engineering professional, to engage and manage today's workforce with experience, precision, and excellence.

This course focuses on providing a toolbox of essential skills any supervisor, manager, or team leader who needs to assist individuals and teams in their quest to reach high levels of performance. The course provides specific, practical solutions to the most common challenges managers encounter, such as how to motivate others, when and how to coach, and dealing with non-performance. Combining useful concepts in the behavioral sciences into a basic approach to managing people and teams, this course emphasizes the changing nature of today’s workforce, especially in a technical work environment, including mechanical engineering. The course is divided into two major sections:

  • Diagnosis – understanding how to break work into parts—including the work people can do and will do—to determine when you should give direction versus when to give support
  • Application – how to approach the model in real world situations engineering managers face everyday

By participating in this course, you will learn how to successfully:

  • Explain how to improve team performance and commitment
  • Encourage employee initiative and avoid grievances, complaints and legal problems
  • Increase your communication and leadership skills
  • Motivate the underachiever and get outstanding team performance
  • Mediate disputes between employees
  • Develop a personal plan for success
