This foundational micro-credential introduces the engineering principles and code requirements essential for the design of piping systems and transmission pipelines. Focused on ASME’s most current standards, the course addresses piping used in power generation (ASME B31.1) and processing industries (ASME B31.3), as well as pipeline systems transporting liquids and slurries (ASME B31.4) and gases (ASME B31.8). Nuclear safety-class piping systems (ASME B&PVC, Section III) are not included.

Learners will gain a working knowledge of the 2022 editions of these key ASME codes, with a focus on code intent, design rules, and the practical application of engineering judgment.

By participating in this course, you will learn how to successfully:

  • Develop the design methods and criteria for the qualification of power and process piping systems, and transmission pipelines in accordance with the ASME B31 Codes.
  • Develop the loads that apply to the design of piping systems and pipelines. 
  • Calculate the minimum wall thickness for internal pressure using the various ASME B31 Codes.
  • Evaluate the longitudinal stresses in piping and pipelines, given the applicable loads and the piping system design input.
  • Assess the options available for design by finite element analysis, and their practical usefulness.

This course is designed for mechanical, piping, and pipeline engineers; project engineers; and other technical professionals working in the power, oil & gas, petrochemical, and process industries who need to understand and apply ASME piping and pipeline codes in design and project execution.
