President Biden Releases FY 2024 Budget Request

The Biden-Harris Administration released its fiscal year 2024 budget request last week, presenting spending priorities for Congress to weigh as lawmakers work to return to “regular order” in the appropriations process, aiming to pass 12 separate appropriations bills before the end of the current fiscal year on September 30th.  The request includes record funding for key CHIPS and Science Act agencies like the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Department of Energy.

According to the summary request, “the Budget provides $25 billion, an increase of approximately $6.5 billion from the 2023 enacted level, for CHIPS and Science Act authorized activities. This includes $11.3 billion at the NSF, $8.8 billion at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, $1 billion at NIST and $4 billion at the Department of Commerce’s (Commerce) Economic Development Administration (EDA). These investments include $1.2 billion for the CHIPS and Science Act-authorized Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships within NSF to help accelerate and translate scientific research into innovations, industries, and jobs. The Directorate will work with programs across the Agency and with other Federal and non-Federal entities to expedite technology development in emerging areas that are crucial for U.S. technological leadership.”
