NIBIB's Scientific Workforce Diversity Office Seeking Input on Strategic Plan

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering’s (NIBIB) Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity (COSWD) Office is seeking input to update its strategic plan. The strategic plan focuses on advancing the scientific workforce diversity and will guide COSWD’s mission and planning for the next five years. The office specifically seeks scientific, evidence-based solutions to promote inclusion, equity, and diversity withing the scientific workforce.
 
The office is seeking feedback on its current strategic plan draft for fiscal years 2022-2026.­­ The plan focuses on a data-driven, measurable approach so that the office can effectively implement its plan to promote scientific workforce diversity. COSWD’s Chief Officer wrote, “Under my leadership, we will maintain and further expand on these data-driven initiatives and strategies based on mutually beneficial relationships in the intramural and extramural research communities. We will build on a strong foundation to advance the COSWD’s mission as the NIH thought leader in the science of scientific workforce diversity, helping to build research capacity (i.e., a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible workforce) at NIH.”
 
The draft plan outlines three cross-cutting strategies, which include collaborations, accountability, and evaluation to achieve COSWD’s goals. The goals are also clearly defined in the plan:
  1. Build the evidence using research insights and NIH as a testbed for innovative scientific programs to enhance diversity in the workforce.
  2. Disseminate the evidence through work with the biomedical scientific community, from trainees to established tenured scientists.
  3. Act T on the evidence by advancing integrated, institution-wide systems to address bias, equity, mentoring, and work-life issues. 
Feedback must be submitted by February 10, 2022 and follow the directions outlined in the Request for Information (RFI).
