ASME Virtual Town Hall with Dr. Michael Roberts of the ISS National Laboratory

ASME Virtual Town Hall with Dr. Michael Roberts of the ISS National Laboratory

On April 25th, ASME held a virtual Town Hall with Dr. Michael Roberts, Chief Scientist of the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory, for a conversation about the lab’s activities and the future of science and technology in space.

During the interactive event, Dr. Roberts shared details about the exciting research and experimentation underway in lower earth orbit, including how telecommunications companies are working on new fiber optics and how pharmaceutical companies are learning new ways that lethal germs can spread. According to Dr. Roberts, developing a better understanding of different physical parameters in the unique research environments of the ISS will be critical to success as engineers and scientists work to make groundbreaking discoveries off of Earth.

Dr. Roberts also noted that travel to the lab is more affordable than ever, helping academic institutions develop a modern STEM workforce through unprecedented access to space. He ended the event by encouraging all ASME members to learn more about partnerships and conducting their own experiments on the ISS. Lower earth orbit is no longer out of your reach!
