White House Seeks Input on National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), on behalf of the Subcommittee on Advanced Manufacturing of the National Science and Technology Council, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to inform development of the next National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing.

The updated plan will provide a long-term framework to coordinate federal programs and investments that strengthen U.S. manufacturing competitiveness. It will update the 2022–2026 National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing, with a continued focus on advancing technology innovation, workforce development, and supply chain resilience.

OSTP is seeking broad input from industry, academia, and other stakeholders on how federal research, policy, and partnership initiatives can best support a robust and secure domestic manufacturing ecosystem. Key topics include:

  • Emerging science and technology areas critical to future manufacturing innovation;

  • Barriers to scaling advanced processes such as additive, nano-, and bio-manufacturing;

  • Mechanisms to accelerate technology transfer and commercialization;

  • Strategies to strengthen workforce training, certification, and apprenticeships; and

  • Policies to enhance supply chain resilience and small business participation in advanced manufacturing.

Advanced manufacturing - defined as production that leverages automation, data analytics, advanced materials, and novel process technologies - remains central to U.S. economic growth, energy security, and national resilience. The new strategy aims to identify federal actions that can accelerate R&D, stimulate private investment, and expand regional innovation clusters and technology hubs.
