Investing in Tomorrow's Engineers: Supporting ASME Foundation Scholarships

Engineering solutions are at the heart of nearly every major challenge our world faces today. From climate change to healthcare accessibility, from infrastructure development to energy efficiency. Engineers are the problem solvers our society depends on. But who will be tomorrow's problem solvers? Who will develop the next generation of standards that keep our world safe and efficient?
As members of ASME's Standards and Certification committees, you understand better than most the critical importance of developing talented engineers who will carry forward the vital work of creating and maintaining the standards that literally hold our world together.

The ASME Foundation: Engineering a Better Future

The ASME Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of ASME, raising funds to support programs that empower the next generation of engineers. While you may be familiar with ASME's technical work, the Foundation's mission complements that work by ensuring we have brilliant minds ready to tackle tomorrow's engineering challenges.
The Foundation's programs fall into three essential categories:
Education – This includes K-12 STEM programs that spark early interest in engineering, scholarships that make engineering education accessible, and College Engineering Festivals that celebrate and promote engineering disciplines.
Careers – The Foundation provides apprenticeships and early career support for community college students, as well as engineering fellowships that help launch promising careers.
Innovation – Through initiatives like Engineering for Change, E4C Fellowships, and ISHOW/IdeaLab, the Foundation supports sustainable innovations that address critical global challenges.

Why Scholarships Matter: Removing Barriers to Brilliance

We all know that engineering talent doesn't discriminate by socioeconomic status. Brilliant minds emerge from every background and circumstance. Yet financial barriers often prevent promising students from pursuing engineering education or force them to abandon their studies before completion.
The obstacles confronting many young people on the path to an engineering career are substantial. Rising tuition costs, the need to work while studying, and the financial burden of textbooks and equipment can derail even the most dedicated students.
This is where scholarships make a profound difference. By removing financial barriers, scholarships allow students to focus on their studies, participate in research opportunities, and fully engage with their engineering education. Every scholarship represents not just financial assistance, but a vote of confidence in a student's potential.

The Unique Perspective of Standards and Certification Experts

As S&C Committee members, you have a unique appreciation for how critical well-trained engineers are to our collective future. The standards you develop and maintain require deep technical knowledge, careful consideration of safety implications, and a commitment to public welfare. All qualities we seek to nurture in scholarship recipients.
Your work in standards development directly connects to the Foundation's mission. Today's scholarship recipients may become tomorrow's committee members, continuing the vital work of creating and updating the standards that protect public safety and enable technological progress.
When you support an ASME Foundation scholarship, you're not just helping an individual student, you're investing in the future of your profession and the continued excellence of ASME's standards work.

Making a Difference: Ways to Support

The ASME Foundation offers several ways for S&C Committee members to support scholarship programs:

  • Direct individual contributions – Even modest donations, when combined with others, can make a significant impact. Contributions can be made easily through asmefoundation.org/donate/.
  • Collective committee donations – Consider organizing your code committee to make a collective donation, perhaps in honor of a retiring member or to commemorate a significant standard publication.
  • Donating the honorarium received related to an award - An honorarium is a fee or cash prize received for a speaking engagement or award. Recipients can donate these funds to one or more of ASME's designated funds, which support various initiatives including scholarships and student programs. This provides a meaningful way for award recipients to give back and support ASME's mission of advancing engineering and education.
  • Per diem donations – Many committee members choose to donate their per diem allowance to the ASME Foundation, turning their service time into a double contribution to the profession.
  • Named scholarships – For those able to make a more substantial commitment, endowing a named scholarship (minimum $50,000) creates a lasting legacy that will support students for years to come.
  • Planned giving – Including the ASME Foundation in your estate planning is another powerful way to ensure your commitment to engineering excellence continues beyond your lifetime.

The Ripple Effect of Your Support

When you support an ASME Foundation scholarship, the impact extends far beyond the individual recipient. Each student who completes their engineering education with the help of a scholarship goes on to solve problems, develop innovations, and potentially mentor the next generation of engineers.
As nonprofit organizations, Foundation programs rely entirely on the generous contributions of ASME members, volunteers, corporations, foundations, and government grants. While our programs have proven their effectiveness, we need additional funding to extend these opportunities to more deserving young people.

Taking the Next Step

If you're interested in learning more about how you can support ASME Foundation scholarships, we encourage you to reach out directly to the ASME Foundation for more information. The Foundation team can provide details about specific scholarship programs, donation options that might best fit your circumstances, and the impact your contribution could make.
Together, we can ensure that financial barriers don't prevent brilliant minds from entering the engineering profession and eventually contributing to the important standards work that ASME has led for over a century.
Your support today helps build the engineering workforce of tomorrow, a workforce that will continue ASME's tradition of advancing engineering for the benefit of humanity.
