Special Issue of ASME Journal to Address Flow Physics of Supercritical Fluids in Engineering

The ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering is currently accepting manuscripts for a special issue focusing on topics related to flow physics of supercritical fluids in engineering. The deadline for authors to submit a paper for the issue, which is expected to be published in June 2021, is June 1, 2020.

A supercritical fluid — a substance that is kept at a temperature and pressure beyond its critical point — has excellent transport performance due to its high density, low viscosity and better diffusion properties.

Supercritical-fluid applications have received increasing attention lately, including supercritical water use in large thermal power generating sets; supercritical carbon dioxide use in highly efficient compact power systems such as concentrated solar power, nuclear power geothermal energy or waste-heat utilization; and supercritical hydrocarbon fuel use in the cooling of scramjets in hypersonic vehicles. Supercritical flow characteristics, particularly for the region near the vicinity of the pseudo-critical point, must be investigated and analyzed to better understand the interesting behavior of these flows, such as heat transfer deterioration and enhancement.

This special issue of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering is dedicated to presenting recent advances in flow physics of supercritical fluids, especially for the fundamentals and applications of supercritical fluids in nuclear power, refrigeration, heat pump and regenerative cooling systems. Submissions must report on original research, including the most recent developments in the field, or offer perspectives on future prospects. Submitted papers are also expected to feature original ideas and novel approaches.

Potential topics for manuscripts to address include advanced simulation methods for supercritical fluids, such as Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and Volume of Fluid (VOF); advanced measurement techniques for supercritical fluids, such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLC), and Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP); and other topics related to multi-scale or multi-physics modeling, and simulation methods for supercritical fluids flow or/and heat transfer.

Papers should be submitted electronically by June 1, 2020, through ASME Journals Connect. Authors who already have an account should log in and select “Submit Paper” at the bottom of the page. Authors without an account should select “Submissions” and follow instructions. At the “Paper Submittal” page, authors should then select “Journal of Fluids Engineering” and then select “Special Issue Flow Physics of Supercritical Fluids in Engineering.” Papers received after the deadline or those not selected for inclusion in the special issue may be accepted for publication in a regular issue.
