Video: Average is Over

Thomas L. Friedman Keynote Address to ASME's 2012 Annual Congress

At the keynote event of ASME's 2012 Congress, author and New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman described how globalization and the information technology revolution have converged. He said skills and knowledge are now available everywhere and that leadership and good jobs cannot be taken for granted. Instead, leadership and good jobs will go only to creative people who engage in non-stop learning. Friedman put it succinctly: "Average is officially over."

Friedman spoke about fracking, energy diversity, and environmental responsibility. Friedman also said he is a big fan of regulatory standards and that engineers should embrace high standards because they play to the technological strength of American engineers.
