American colonists had a staggering disadvatage after declaring independence in 1776. They were facing the era’s greatest military power with no formal navy of its own. But what they did have in surplus was ingenuity, from a self-taught engineer (and bookseller) who moved 60 tons of artillery to a tinkerer who built the first combat submarine, and a Polish engineer who built a fortress so clever that the British didn’t bother trying to attack.
