Hydroelectric power has played key roles in the development of the U.S. and globally, bringing cheap electric power on which to build economic growth. The Department of Energy reported total hydropower capacity of 80.25 GW in 2019, from 2,270 hydro plants. That translates to 6.7 percent of installed electricity generation capacity.
