U.S. Air Force Releases New Artificial Intelligence Strategy Focused on Supporting Defense Department

The U.S. Air Force recently released a plan outlining how it wishes to incorporate artificial intelligence into its strategy. The strategy has been released as an Annex to the Department of Defense (DoD) Artificial Intelligence Strategy that was released earlier this year.

“The Air Force is charged to provide the nation with Air and Space Superiority, Global Strike, Rapid Global Mobility, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, and Command Control. AI is a capability that will underpin our ability to compete, deter, and win across all five of these diverse missions. It is crucial to fielding tomorrow’s Air Force faster and smarter, executing multi-domain operations in the high-end fight, confronting threats below the level of open conflict, and partnering with our allies around the globe.”

The strategy is broken down into four areas of focus:
  • Drive Down Technological Barriers to Entry
  • Recognize and Treat Data as a Strategic Asset
  • Democratize Access to Artificial Intelligence Solutions
  • Recruit, Develop, Upskill, and Cultivate our Workforce
  • Increase Transparency and Cooperation with International, Government, and Industry, and Academic Partners
Underneath each of these areas of focus are additional lines of effort that further narrow the scope of each priority and provide further details to how the areas of focus will support the Air Force’s AI efforts, and use the strategy overall to support DoD’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center as a key leader in AI.
