NSF Issues New Solicitation for National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institutes

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has posted a new solicitation for proposals for a new National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institute to accelerate research, transform society and grow the American workforce. The solicitation has come about as a result of the updated 2019 National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan released in June. The plan identifies eight strategic priorities, the first of which is to make long-term investments in AI research. This solicitation intends to fulfill that objective by creating an AI-centric research institute that pursues AI technology in the interest of the nation.

NSF is leading the cross-agency effort being backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The solicitation calls for two kinds of proposals: proposals for institutes and proposals for planning. Institute proposals must address one of the following six specified themes: Trustworthy AI; Foundations of Machine Learning; AI-Driven Innovation in Agriculture and the Food System; AI-Augmented Learning; AI for Accelerating Molecular Synthesis and Manufacturing; or AI for Discovery in Physics. Planning proposals can be broader, touching on any areas of research appropriate to developing a National AI Research Institute. The solicitation aims to ensure that the U.S. remains a leader in AI technology and that the development of the technology is channeled into areas of national importance.

All proposals are due by the end of January. To view the full solicitation, visit: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2020/nsf20503/nsf20503.htm?WT.mc_id=USNSF_25&WT.mc_ev=click
