New! ASME Statement on Ensuring a Reliable and Resilient Electric Grid

ASME’s Energy Public Policy Task Force has released a new position statement on “Ensuring a Reliable and Resilient Electrical Grid.” The purpose of this paper is to outline major challenges facing the U.S. electrical grid and recommended solutions for policymakers to support sustainable infrastructure development towards a more reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy system.

The report provides brief background on the recent history of power disruptions in the U.S., looking at key incidents in Texas, California, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, the Northeastern U.S., and Florida. This background on the increasingly vulnerable U.S. electric grid provides policymakers with concrete examples of the multiple threats facing the grid as it operates today, including aging infrastructure, climate change, and cyber and physical attack vulnerabilities.

The paper concludes with several recommendations for strengthening grid reliability and resiliency, including accelerating the replacement of aging infrastructure and deploying new energy storage and smart grid technologies.
