National Science Foundation Announces New Partnerships with Bevy of Agencies Including NASA and NIST

Following the White House’s release of its five-year strategic plan for STEM education, the National Science Foundation recently announced a new set of partnerships in support of its NSF INCLUDES National Network. Examples of these partnerships include with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The NSF INCLUDES program strives to increase and improve U.S. leadership through nationwide networks focused on solutions to broadening participation in the sciences. The program was created in 2016 as part of the 10 Big Ideas for Future Investment initiative in response to the White House’s goal of maintaining the country's innovation capacity by increasing diversity and inclusion through broader access to STEM.

"There are populations in the United States who are missing from the STEM ecosystem," said NSF Director France Córdova. "The nation will be stronger when these people are given access to STEM education and encouraged to become innovators. Our STEM enterprise will never reach its full potential until that happens. I'm proud to be part of this effort. We will find new ways to inspire all our nation's young people, support them and encourage more of them to pursue amazing careers in STEM."

In response to the White House’s STEM strategy, NSF also recently announced $10 million to its Data Science Corps. This program provides basic training in data science to existing workforces at the local, state and national levels. Additionally, the NSF anticipates providing funding for approximately 200 internships 200 internships of up to $55,000 for graduate students in fiscal years 2019 and 2020 through its NSF INTERN program.
