National Science and Technology Council Looks to Bridge the Divide Across the Science and Technology Communities at Recent Event

The White House National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) recently held a conference at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Building Bridges Across the [Science and Technology] S&T Enterprise. The aim of the conference was to discuss strategies for making effective portfolio management decisions, identify opportunities to leverage resources and ensure that federally-funded research and development (R&D) is accessible for public benefit, and exchange best practices in building evidence to assess the impacts of R&D investments.

Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy provided the keynote speech on the first day of the event. Dr. Droegemeier has spoken previously of the need to create a stronger, enterprise-wide understanding of U.S. research and development, as well as the need to build stronger relationships between research institutions.

Walter Copan, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provided the day’s second keynote speech in which he spoke to the need for a stronger return on investment for science and technology and discussed the federal administration’s technology transfer policy initiative.

Other topics of discussion at the conference included how to use data and community input to develop strategies; communicating the impact of R&D; and sharing data to improve R&D outcomes.
