House Intelligence Committee Restructuring Creates New Subcommittee Focused on Emerging Technologies

The House Intelligence Committee recently announced that it has restructured itself, and in doing so created a new subcommittee dedicated to emerging technologies. The Strategic Technologies and Advanced Research Subcommittee (STAR) will oversee “the development and implementation of emerging and advanced technologies that are essential to intelligence collection and national security. This includes ensuring the United States remains at the cutting edge in overhead systems, artificial intelligence/machine learning and computing, as well as data and systems integrity.” The STAR Subcommittee will be chaired by Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT).

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is responsible for the oversight of the U.S. Intelligence Communities, which includes the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, State, Treasury and Energy. The Committee is chaired by Representative Adam Schiff (D-MA). There are four subcommittees under the House Intelligence Committee:

  • Strategic Technologies and Advanced Research (STAR) Subcommittee
  • Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, and Counterproliferation (C3) Subcommittee
  • Intelligence Modernization and Readiness (INMAR) Subcommittee
  • Defense Intelligence and Warfighter Support (DIWS) Subcommittee
