ASME and Rep Sean Casten OpEd on Science and Engineering Competitiveness

ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile and U.S. Representative Sean Casten (representing Illinois’ 6th District) have released a joint op-ed titled “The time is now for Biden and Congress to follow through on CHIPS, science and clean energy.”

The piece argues that the landmark science, technology, and clean energy programs that were enacted in 2022 must be fully funded in the FY24 budget, which the Biden administration is preparing to send to Congress next month. Congress must follow through with minimal partisan conflict lest the United States go backwards and fall behind competing nations.

Costabile and Casten write: “America’s strengths in science, engineering, and technology are at the heart of our national prosperity and our hopes of solving the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate change and economic growth. And yet, for decades, the federal government has under-invested in science and technology. Now, there’s a golden opportunity to do better, and we must seize it on a bipartisan basis.”
