AI Expert Victoria Coleman Named New Head of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

Victoria Coleman, founding chair of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA’s) Microsystems Exploratory Council and a member of the Defense Science Board, has been appointed the new Director of DARPA. Her expertise includes artificial intelligence (AI) and microelectronics. Coleman plans to assume the position later this month and will replace former DARPA Director Steven Walker, who stepped down in January 2020, and DARPA deputy director Peter Highnam who has been serving as acting director in the interim.
 
Most recently, Coleman served as a senior advisor at the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) at the University of California Berkeley. Previously, she held the position of CEO at Atlas AI, Senior Vice President at Technicolor, CTO of Connected Home Business, Vice President of Engineering at Yahoo!, Vice President of Software Engineering at Hewlett-Packard Palm Global Business Unit, and Director for Security Initiatives at Intel. She is also a member of Lockheed Martin’s Technology Advisory Group and a member of Santa Clara University’s Advisory Board for the Department of Computer Engineering.
 
Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Michael Kratsios commented,
