White House Announces ‘Genesis Mission’ to Transform American Science and Innovation Through the AI Computing Revolution

The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a new initiative, known as the Genesis Mission, aimed at expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced computing, and scientific instrumentation across the federal research enterprise. The initiative is established through a new Executive Order and is intended to modernize DOE’s research capabilities and accelerate scientific discovery.

Under the direction of DOE leadership, the Genesis Mission will coordinate efforts across the Department’s 17 National Laboratories, universities, and industry partners to develop an integrated research platform that connects high-performance computing, AI systems, quantum technologies, and major scientific facilities. DOE reports that the platform will draw on the expertise of approximately 40,000 scientists, engineers, and technical staff.

The initiative identifies three primary focus areas:

  • Energy Systems: Applying AI and advanced modeling to support progress in advanced nuclear, fusion energy research, and grid modernization.

  • Discovery Science: Strengthening national capabilities in areas such as quantum information science and other emerging fields that rely on advanced computation.

  • National Security: Developing and deploying AI tools to support defense-related missions, including work on materials science and stockpile stewardship.

DOE has appointed the Under Secretary for Science to lead the effort. According to the Department, the Genesis Mission is intended to enhance capabilities for scientific research, increase coordination across federal and private R&D partners, and prepare U.S. research infrastructure for rapidly evolving AI and computing technologies.
