SDO’s Unite to Oppose the Pro Codes Act

Recently, HR 4072, the Pro Codes Act, was reintroduced in Congress and unfortunately poses the same threats to the standards industry that it has in the past. Last year, supporters of the Pro Codes Act claimed it represented the standards development community. It did not then and it does not now.  Leading Standards Development Organizations (SDO’s) oppose HR 4072, the Pro Codes Act. The unintended consequences of this bill will lead to the unraveling of America’s standards industry, severely damaging American competitiveness on a global scale.

To demonstrate this opposition, ASME’s Executive Director and CEO, Tom Costabile, along with the leaders of America’s leading SDO’s sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee opposing this damaging legislation. To read this letter, click here.

Standards that protect the American people and enable our economy to thrive will suffer irrevocable harm from the unintended consequences of this legislation.  From engineering safety standards applied to power plants, nuclear reactors and pressure vessels to Wi-Fi standards that enable every phone and laptop to connect to the internet, the standards development system is critical to the strength of our economy and status as a leading competitor on the world stage. The Pro Codes Act would severely harm the standards industry while applying a broad policy brush to a complicated and highly technical ecosystem that the world relies on.
