ASME Bluegrass Section: Magnetic Kinematic Interface Simulator

October 20 5:30PM - October 20 7:30PM, 2022

20 October 5:30 - 20 October 7:30, 2022

Thursday - Thursday Lexington, Kentucky, USA

Description

Join us at 5:30 pm on October 20th at Sutton's Restaurant (110 N. Locust Hill Drive, Lexington, KY 40509) for dinner and pleasant conversation. Our own Chuck Bast will present a clever and versatile aid for describing how mechanical parts are described and how they work together. In his book, Exact Constraint: Machine Design Using Kinematic Principles, Douglass L. Blanding uses the concept of links with a ball joint on each end to model both translational and rotational constraints. He describes a method to visualize the concept by using wooden dowels to represent a rigid link and hot-melt glue to simulate a compliant ball joint. "I improved the concept by constructing a framework using three mutually perpendicular steel sheets, steel rods with high strength magnets on each end, and various steel parts to represent the geometric types of objects." Chuck Bast holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T) and retired from Lexmark & IBM after over 36 years in various engineering roles, mainly in product development. He taught GD&T classes at Lexmark's worldwide facilities. He is certified as a Senior Level Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional by ASME and is a member of ASME's Y14.45 subcommittee which recently released a new standard on the topic of Measurement Data Reporting.
