ASME Standards & Certification Announces Honors and Awards Recipients

Each year, ASME Standards & Certification (S&C) issues numerous honors and awards to recognize the contribution and service of individuals involved with its standards development activities. Below is a highlight of a few of the 2018 honors and awards recipients. ASME S&C would like to thank all of its standards and certification volunteers for their contributions and service.

Richard W. Barnes, President at ANRIC Enterprises Inc., was announced as the recipient of the Standards & Certification’s most prestigious award, the Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal. Mr. Barnes is recognized for distinguished leadership and professionalism in the research, development, promotion, acceptance and application of ASME standards. Mr. Barnes is a member and past chair of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) Technical Oversight Management Committee; a member of the Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards; a member and past chair of the BPV III Standards Committee; a member and past chair of the Qualification of Mechanical Equipment Used in Nuclear Facilities (QME) Standards Committee.

 

Julius A. Ballanco, President of JB Engineering & Code Consulting PC, was announced as the recipient of the Patrick J. Higgins Medal. Mr. Ballanco is recognized for outstanding leadership, extraordinary perseverance and enthusiastic participation on numerous water committees, which led to the enhancement of industry standardization, research and the advancement of safe and efficient practices in the field of plumbing engineering. Mr. Ballanco is a member of the A112 Plumbing Materials and Equipment Standards committee; a member of numerous subtier groups reporting to the noted standards committee; and a member of B16 Subcommittee J on Copper and Copper Alloy Flanges, Flanged Fittings, and Solder Joint Fittings.

 

Ralph S. Hill III, Managing Member at Hill Engineering Solutions, was announced as the recipient of the Bernard F. Langer Nuclear Codes and Standards Award. Mr. Hill is recognized for dedicated service and countless contributions to ASME Nuclear Codes and Standards for more than 40 years, particularly outstanding leadership in the advancement of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III and the Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards. Mr. Hill is a member of the Council on Standards and Certification; a member of the Boards on Nuclear Codes and Standards, Strategic Initiatives, and ASME Energy and Environmental Standards Advisory Board; chair of the BPV III Standards Committee; and a member of numerous other committees.

 

Michael P. McHale, President of McHale & Associates, Inc., was announced as the recipient of the Performance Test Codes Medal. Mr. McHale is recognized for outstanding leadership in performance test codes, particularly testing programs of steam turbines in combined cycles and overall plant performance; and for contributions to the Performance Test Codes Standards Committee and several standards for the measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits. Mr. McHale is a member of the Performance Test Codes Standards Committee and a member of numerous other committees.


 

James E. Richardson, Weight Handing Engineering Specialist at the U.S. Department of the Navy, was announced as the recipient of the Safety Codes and Standards Medal. Mr. Richardson is recognized for more than two decades of excellence in the development process for B30 Safety Standards for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings including service as chair of B30.13 Storage/Retrieval Machines and Associated Equipment, and B30.24 Container Cranes. Mr. Richardson is a member of the B30 Safety Standards Committee for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings; chair of the B30.13 Storage/Retrieval Machines and Associated Equipment; and a member of numerous other committees.

  

Daniel T. Peters, Associate at Structural Integrity Associates, was announced as the recipient of the J. Hall Taylor Medal. Mr. Peters is recognized for outstanding contributions to the development and promotion of ASME standards for pressure equipment; and for efforts to enhance public safety and component reliability through dedicated service on the Society’s pressure vessel and piping committees. Mr. Peters is a member of the Council on Standards and Certification; a member of the Boards on Hearing and Appeals, and Pressure Technology Codes and Standards; a member of the Pressure Technology Post Construction Standards Committee; a member of BPV VIII Standards Committee; and a member of numerous other committees.

 

Robert V. Wielgoszinski, Principal Code Consultant at Hartford Steam Boilers (HSB), was announced as the recipient of the Wilfred C. LaRochelle Conformity Assessment Award. Mr. Wielgoszinski is recognized for career efforts that support HSB and its clients on all aspects of ASME Conformity Assessment; for 25 years of contributions to ASME on conformity assessment; and for more than 20 years of service on several committees of The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) including chairing the National Board Inspection Code Main Committee. Mr. Wielgoszinski is a member of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) Technical Oversight Management Committee; an ex-officio member of the Board on Conformity Assessment; chair of the Qualifications for Authorized Inspection (QAI) Standards Committee; a member of the BPV I, IV Standards Committees; chair of the committee on Boiler and Pressure Vessel Conformity Assessment; and a member of numerous other committees.

ASME Dedicated Service Awards – The award honors dedicated voluntary service to the Society marked by outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, prolonged and committed service, devotion, enthusiasm and faithfulness

The grade of Fellow honors outstanding engineering achievement and is ASME’s highest level of membership.
