Papers Sought for Special Journal Issue on Rehabilitation Robots, Devices and Methodologies

The ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy is currently seeking manuscripts for a special issue focusing on the topic of rehabilitation robots, devices and methodologies. The deadline for authors to submit a paper for the issue, which is scheduled to be published in March 2020, is Oct. 15, 2019.

Most developed countries are encountering an aging of their populations ― along with the accompanying increase in the occurrence of neuromuscular disabilities and diseases including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and other debilitating disorders. Although rehabilitation has proven to be an effective therapy for these ailments, it also requires the development of assisting devices and methodologies for limb/body and cognitive rehabilitation. During the past few decades, the kinematic/dynamic analysis and control of rehabilitation robots and design of rehabilitation methodologies have inspired mechanical and biomedical engineering researchers to begin proposing the use of these novel technologies as solutions for neuromuscular illnesses.

The upcoming special issue of the ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy is intended to feature original research and high-quality review articles on rehabilitation robots, devices and methodologies, with a special focus on dynamics, control, kinematics, and sensing/actuation. The editors of the special issue invite researchers to submit their unpublished and original work on recent advances in theoretical, experimental or computational aspects of rehabilitation robotics, device, and techniques, as well as practical applications.

The special issue will deal with a number of topics including design and analysis of limb/body function rehabilitation robots and devices; design and analysis of cognitive rehabilitation robots and devices; kinematic analysis and synthesis of rehabilitation mechanisms and robotic systems; dynamics and control of rehabilitation devices; rehabilitation methodologies inspired by mechanical structures and materials; and machine learning driven rehabilitation systems.

The editors for the special issue are Ping Zhao, Hefei University of Technology, China, ping.zhao@hfut.edu.cn; Bin Zi, Hefei University of Technology, China, zibinhfut@163.com; Anurag Purwar, Stony Brook University, U.S.A., anurag.purwar@stonybrook.edu; and Ning An, Hefei University of Technology, China, ning.g.an@acm.org.

Papers should be submitted electronically to the journal via Journals Connect at https://journaltool.asme.org. Authors who already have an account should log in and select “Submit Paper” at the bottom of the page. Authors who do not have an account should select “Submissions” and follow the step-by-step instructions. In either case, once authors reach the “Paper Submittal” page, they should select the ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy and then choose “Rehabilitation Robots, Devices and Methodologies” in the special issue dropdown menu.

Early submission is highly encouraged. Papers submitted by Oct. 15, 2019, will be reviewed in time for inclusion in the special issue. Papers received after that date may still be considered for the special issue, time and space permitting.
