Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Each year on the third Monday in January, we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in honor of the civil rights leader whose words and actions have shaped modern America and served as an inspiration to people across the world. It was nearly 57 years ago that Dr. King delivered his iconic address from the Lincoln Memorial at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In his speech, Dr. King laid bare the injustice of racial inequality to the American public and shared his dream of a future where people would not be judged by the color of their skin but rather by the content of their character.
 
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. The 2020 MLK holiday marked the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates Dr. King’s life and legacy. ASME has a thriving corps of volunteers who contribute their time and talents in service of our mission every day for which ASME is extremely grateful. As you work with volunteers around this MLK Day, please take a moment to recognize them for their contributions and service to ASME.
 
There are many other ways that we as individuals can honor Dr. King’s legacy. You may want to read or listen to some of his speeches, which you can find at The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute. Or you may want to volunteer in your community as part of the day of service. You can learn about the day of service here.
