Codes and Standards Training Event Slated for New York in August

July 22, 2016

ASME Training & Development will present a live training event next month in New York where engineers and technical professionals will have the opportunity to learn about ASME’s Pressure Vessels, Piping, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Codes from the experts who helped write them. The program, which will consist of four short courses, will take place Aug. 22 to 26 at New Horizons career training center at 462 Seventh Ave. in Manhattan, N.Y.

The first course, “BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 1: Design & Fabrication of Pressure Vessels,” will provide attendees with a comprehensive introduction to the requirements of Section VIII, Div. 1 of ASME’s Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, focusing on pressure vessel design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and documentation. By the end of the course, to be held Aug. 22 to 24, participants will be able to describe the background of the Code; explain how to apply the Code rules to more common design and fabrication situations; identify the calculations for some of the loadings and situations not addressed by the Code; and describe the preparation of design specifications, design reports, data reports, and other documentation.

The course, “Inspections, Repairs and Alterations of Pressure Equipment,” on Aug. 25 and 26, will present attendees with an introduction to the requirements of various codes and standards that pertain to the inspection, repairs and alterations of pressure equipment and pressure vessels. The course will feature detailed coverage of the requirements of the National Board Inspection Code and the API-510, a brief introduction to API-579 Fitness-for-Service assessment, a review of simple flaw evaluation procedures, and a discussion of ASME’s Post Construction Committee activities and the documents published by the committee.

The training event in New York will also include two courses focusing on the Y14.5 ASME Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) Standard. The first of these courses, “Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Fundamentals 1,” will take place on Aug. 22 and 23. The class, which combines lecture with animated graphics and video clips to ensure an engaging experience, will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental geometric concepts and enable them to interpret and explain the application of geometric symbols on drawings. Upon completion of the course, students will also be able to explain how to select datum reference frames properly as well as calculate position and profile tolerances.

A second GD&T course, “Geometric Tolerancing Applications and Tolerance Stacks,” will offer students who have taken the Fundamentals 1 course the additional instruction they’ll need to properly apply geometric tolerancing and perform tolerance stacks to define and optimize their product design. This class, which will take place Aug. 24 and 25, will teach participants how to employ the proper interpretation, application and verification using geometric tolerancing on parts and assemblies. Students will also learn how to explain how to perform linear, axial and orientation tolerance stacks and describe how to reallocate tolerances to meet manufacturing capabilities.

Attendees can register for the four courses individually or save up to $825 by registering for either the BPV Code Combo Course or the GD&T Combo Course. For more information on the training event in New York, or to register, visit http://calendar.asme.org/EventDetail.cfm?EventID=34450.
