Submissions Sought for Special Issue of New ASME Journal

Papers are now being accepted for a special issue of the new ASME journal, the ASME Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, which will focus on grid-interactive efficient buildings. Authors who are interested in submitting a manuscript to be considered for the journal should submit their papers electronically via ASME Journals Connect by April 15, 2020.

The special issue of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, to be published in November 2020, is intended to provide a resource for investigators seeking high-quality research on grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) as well as integrated and sustainable equipment and systems for individual buildings and urban centers.

GEBs are defined as highly energy-efficient buildings equipped with smart technologies and distributed energy resources that can be dynamically controlled to meet grid needs and minimize electricity system costs, while meeting occupants’ comfort and productivity requirements. GEBs can involve a suite of building technologies — such as heating and cooling systems, connected lighting, dynamic windows, occupancy sensing, and thermal mass — as well as distributed energy resources such as rooftop photovoltaics, electrochemical and thermal energy storage, and combined heat and power.

The special issue on GEBs will cover a broad selection of topics related to enhancing sustainability, resiliency, and flexibility of building energy systems, including innovative technologies to enhance energy efficiency for various building components, building integrated renewable energy technologies, and advanced optimized control strategies to design and operate smart grid-interactive efficient buildings.

Topic areas to be covered in the special issue will include demand response, distributed energy resources, dynamic materials, energy costs and efficiency, dynamic windows, energy storage, grid services, lighting systems, optimal controls, and thermal comfort.

Papers should be submitted to the ASME Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities by April 15, 2020, through ASME Journals Connect at journaltool.asme.org. Authors who already have an account should log in and select “Submit Paper” at the right of the Papers table. Authors who do not have an account should select “Click here” next to New Authors at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. Authors should then choose “ASME Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities” and then select “Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings” from the special issue drop-down list. Papers received after the April 15, 2020, deadline or those not selected for inclusion in the special issue may be accepted for publication in a regular issue.

The editor for the special issue is Moncef Krarti, Ph.D., co-editor of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, University of Colorado Boulder, U.S.A; email krarti@colorado.edu.
