On April 6, a delegation of leaders from the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), led by the society’s Vice Chairman and Secretary General Lu Daming, visited ASME headquarters in New York City to meet with members of the ASME staff and discuss potential opportunities for future cooperation.

During the event in New York, Lu and his colleagues from CMES met with ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin as well as members of several ASME departments including Standards & Certification, Global Development, Engineering Education and Marketing. ASME staff members participating in the meeting included William Berger, managing director, Standards, Standards & Certification; John Koehr, managing director, Technology and Personnel Certification, Engineering; Heidi Hijikata, director, Global Development; Raj Manchanda, business development director, Manufacturing; Elio Manes, director, Communities and Service, Engineering; Robert Lettieri, manager, International Relations, Global Development; Aisha Lawrey, director, Engineering Education, Engineering; Yanyan Han, data and marketing analyst, Marketing; and Matthew Vazquez, manager, Conformity Assessment Operations, Standards & Certification.

CMES has had a long and collaborative history with ASME spanning more than 30 years. One of the first major milestones in the relationship between the two societies took place in 1986, when ASME and CMES signed their first agreement of cooperation, which led to more active participation by CMES members in ASME activities, particularly in ASME conferences. In 2000, ASME and CMES jointly organized the International Congress of Mechanical Engineering Societies (ICOMES) and the International Conference on Mechanical Engineering.

More recent activities have included a 2015 visit by the ASME Board of Governors to China, during which members of the Board met with CMES, the China Academy of Engineering (CAE) and China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ). Last year, ASME and CMES cooperated on the Sino-American Technology and Engineering Conference (SATEC) Forum on Innovation and Intelligent Manufacturing, where a delegation of ASME leadership including ASME President Keith Roe and Executive Director Tom Loughlin met with Vice Premier Ma Kai.
