Infographic: Where Mechanical Engineers Work and Earn the Most

How much mechanical engineers earn depends on their industry, education, experience, responsibilities, and talent. Where they work, however, may be the largest indicator of compensation.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median yearly earnings of mechanical engineers stand well above the national average. Moreover, the industry where an ME works is a good indicator of pay, for example those in the oil and gas extraction industry earn more than in any other field employing MEs.

Yet, where in the country an ME works is a great indicator of how much that ME will earn. This usually is attributed to the high cost of living in many areas of the United States, but more than likely it is also the difficulty of recruiting highly sought after professionals.
