Video: Subra Suresh, 2012 Timoshenko Medal

Subra Suresh is the director of the National Science Foundation. He's been an instrumental leader in programs to support interdisciplinary research and to coordinate international science funding.

Previously, Dr. Suresh served as dean of the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. He has also been on the faculty at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Dr. Suresh has conducted research and modeling on the mechanical properties of structural and functional materials. His work also includes materials design and characterization. He often works across disciplines, and has made discoveries of possible connections between cellular nanomechanical processes and human disease.

Dr. Suresh received his Sc.D. degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. His bachelor's degree is from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He earned a master's degree from Iowa State University in Ames.
