There’s no doubt that coal’s time as the dominant fuel for electricity generation is waning. But as countries around the globe attempt to decarbonize their economies, coal is still at the top of the heap. Renewable energy sources are growing and getting cheaper, but surging demand in Asia, the threat of cutoffs of Russian natural gas in Europe and a need for consistent baseload power keep coal in the short-term mix.
