Special Issue: Tribute to Ward O. Winer
Journal of Tribology
The ASME Journal of Tribology invites submissions for a special issue dedicated to celebrating the life, legacy, and profound contributions of Professor Ward O. Winer, a towering figure in the field of tribology and mechanical engineering, who passed away on May 25, 2025. Professor Winer was also the third Editor-in-Chief and the first when the journal was renamed the "Journal of Tribology."Professor Winer was a Regents’ Professor Emeritus at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a globally respected leader in tribology, fluid mechanics, and mechanical systems diagnostics. His pioneering research, mentorship, and leadership shaped generations of engineers and scholars. Among his many accolades, he received the Tribology Gold Medal from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Mayo D. Hersey Award from ASME, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He also served as the longest-standing Chair of Georgia Tech’s George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering.
We also welcome personal reflections, technical commentaries, and collaborative retrospectives from colleagues, students, and collaborators who were influenced by Professor Winer’s work and mentorship.
