We invite submissions for an upcoming special issue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for smart, high performance, and resilient buildings and cities. We welcome original research articles, review papers, case studies, and short communications from a wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to) architecture, urban planning, engineering, computer science, data science, social sciences, and public health.

AI and ML are transforming the way we design, operate, and manage buildings and cities. By leveraging advanced data analytics, predictive modeling, and intelligent control, AI/ML can optimize energy performance, enhance occupant comfort, and strengthen resilience against various strong weather events and other disruptions. These technologies enable smarter decision making across the built environment, from adaptive building systems and predictive maintenance to climate responsive urban planning, and paving the way for higher performance and resilient communities.

Topic Areas

THE SCOPE OF THIS ISSUE INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:
  • AI/ML for building energy modeling, optimization, and performance prediction
  • Digital twins for buildings and urban environments
  • Smart building control and HVAC optimization using AI/ML
  • AI-driven approaches for climate adaptation and resilience in the built environment
  • AI/ML for indoor environmental quality monitoring and occupant comfort
  • Predictive maintenance of building systems and infrastructure
  • Use of AI/ML for load forecast of buildings and cities
  • AI-enhanced urban design, mobility, and transportation systems
  • Integration of AI/ML with IoT and sensor networks for smart buildings and cities
  • Socio-technical aspects, ethical considerations, and policy implications of AI/ML adoption in the built environment

Special Issue Publication Dates

Paper submission deadline: November 30, 2025
Initial review completed: December 31, 2025
