Architected metamaterials (AMMs) utilize engineered architectures at various scales (e.g., nano and micro) to achieve tunable and often unconventional properties (e.g., high strength-to-weight ratio, negative Poisson’s ratio, programmable stiffness or morphing, etc.). Advances in fabrication techniques, such as additive manufacturing and nanomanufacturing, have expanded the design space significantly to enable the creation of AMMs with more diverse and exceptional properties. This poses unique design challenges and drives the need for scalable and effective design methodologies. Boosted by structural optimization, data-driven approaches, and emerging artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) methods, the design of AMMs is advancing at an unprecedented pace, bringing both new challenges and exciting opportunities for innovation in design.

This special issue aims to provide a platform for cutting-edge research that advances the design strategies, methodologies, and applications of architected materials. We invite contributions that address critical design challenges, establish design frameworks, and explore novel methods for the design of AMMs, spanning representation, evaluation, and synthesis. Submissions offering perspective discussions on challenges and opportunities in AMMs design are also encouraged.
