Special Issue: From Biology to Manufacturing - Engineered Living Materials
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering
Engineered living materials (ELMs) represent an emerging frontier at the intersection of synthetic biology, materials science, and manufacturing. ELMs combine the structural properties of traditional materials with attributes of living systems, and thus are capable of performing tasks that are not accessible to existing engineered systems, such as self-replication, self-regulation, self-healing, environmental responsiveness, etc. Given the rapid advances in this field, a focused special issue will provide timely coverage of both fundamental research and translational developments.
The special issue will 1) highlight recent advances in bio-manufacturing techniques for ELMs, including design, modeling, and process innovations; 2) showcase applications across diverse domains such as structural materials, energy, biomedicine, and environmental systems; and 3) foster dialogue between the manufacturing science community and researchers in synthetic biology, material science, and bioengineering.
