This two day MasterClass provides an overview of the EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), highlights the changes in the 2014/68/EU version, and identifies specific issues of importance.  This is followed by a detailed review of the requirements of the PED and how employing the ASME Codes can satisfy them.  As each aspect of the Directive is discussed, examples are provided to illustrate how the Codes meet the PED and how they should be documented to fulfill the Technical Documentation requirements of the PED.  Practical demonstrations are provided for the “assessment of hazards and risks,” preparation of PMAs, technical documentation and quality system documentation to meet the optional quality system requirements.

You Will Learn To:
 - Identify the requirements and recent changes of the PED and explain what is necessary to satisfy these requirements
 - Describe the use of ASME Codes for design and manufacture of pressure equipment to comply with the PED
 - Document PMAs for selected materials
 - Prepare technical documentation that describes how the applicable European Safety Requirements (ESRs) have been met
 - Prepare a quality system documentation appropriate for assessment per ASME PED Guide Modules E, D, H, H1

Peter John Hanmore, C Eng, MIMMM, is a metallurgist with nearly 40 years’ experience in the inspection industry. In addition to managing a multi-disciplinary team that provides inspection and consultancy services to manufacturers of new pressure equipment, he has extensive hands-on experience in the fields of materials, failure investigations, welding, mechanical testing, NDE, inspection and quality assurance. Peter is a recognised expert in the field of CE marking for both pressure equipment and machinery, having participated for many years in the development of European Standards and the co-ordination of Notified Body activities at both national and European Level.

Peter has considerable experience of performing technical and quality system assessments of manufacturers of pressure equipment, materials and conformity assessment bodies. He is fully conversant with British, European, and American Codes and Standards, having been qualified as an Authorised Inspection Supervisor for over 20 years, and serving 7 years on the Board of Directors of ASME Codes and Standards.

Peter is an active participation in the UK and European Conformity Assessment Body Forum, where he served as Chairman for each. Peter has represented the UK on European Technical Committees during the development of several harmonised standards, including EN 13445, EN 13480 & ISO 3834, as well as serving as Secretary of WPM for 7 years. Owing to his extensive knowledge of European and ASME requirements, Peter has conducted numerous, worldwide presentations on behalf of ASME to explain how its Codes can be used as a basis for meeting PED.

Currently, Peter is a Team Leader, authorised by ASME and the National Board for the assessment of manufacturers of non-nuclear pressure equipment and safety relief devices.

Colin Pimley, C Eng, M.I.Mech.E, is a highly experienced, conformity assessment professional with an in-depth knowledge of the EU ‘New Legislative Framework’ (NLF) and associated product directives covering pressure equipment, construction products and machinery.

Colin has over 25 years’ experience in product conformity assessment, which he gained via a series of senior technical positions with leading global conformity assessment organisations throughout the regulated sector.

A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Colin originally trained in pressure equipment design, and worked in the water-tube boiler industry for eight years. Through this work he developed his expertise in product design and manufacturing. Moving into the conformity assessment sector afforded the opportunity to deepen his knowledge across a wider range of pressure equipment using numerous national and international codes, including those of ASME.

Colin has worked with the PED (Pressure Equipment Directive) from its original introduction in the late 1990’s. Additionally, he has been closely involved in the development of its interpretations and guidelines via participation in the Notified Body Coordination Meetings at both the national and European level.

More recently, Colin held Technical Management roles with two leading Notified Bodies, for which he was responsible for maintaining accreditations, development of technical procedures, competence management, as well as being the focal point for resolving complex technical issues.

Currently, Colin works as a freelance consultant offering his expertise to a range of stakeholders.
