This course provides an introduction to the A17.6 Standard for Elevator Suspension, Compensation, and Governor Systems.
This Standard contains three parts, covering three specific types of suspension technology for elevators:
Part 1: Stranded Carbon Steel Wire Ropes
Part 2: Aramid Fiber Ropes, and
Part 3: Noncircular Elastomeric Coated Steel Suspension Members.
The first edition of A17.1 was published in 1921 and has been continually updated to provide for improvement in safety and allowances in new technology.
The nineteenth edition of ASME A17.1/CSA B44 was published in 2010. Among the revisions in this edition are changes to several areas regarding elevator suspension, most of which had to be updated to include the two new types of suspension means, are also included in the A17.6 Standard.
These revisions were developed by the A17 Mechanical Design Suspension Means Task Group concurrently with the development of the A17.6 Standard. Special efforts were made to ensure that both the new A17.6 Standard and the revisions to A17.1 were published together so that the references in each document would be relevant.
