Description

Please consider bringing your family and friends, and plan to join Members of the ASME NW Ohio Section as we tour the Lake Freighter Col. James M. Schoonmaker and the Tug Ohio at the National Museum of the Great Lakes on SATURDAY, May 13. Our guided tour will be of the boats. Attendees are then free to tour the Museum exhibits on their own - under the same admission fee - following the completion of our guided tour of the boats. The Col. James M. Schoonmaker was built at the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ecorse, Michigan. She was christened by Gretchen Schoonmaker daughter of the ship’s namesake and launched on July 1, 1911. The Schoonmaker was unsurpassed in both size and elegance. On her maiden trip, she carried 12,650 net tons of coal from Toledo, Ohio to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The ship held the title of “Queen of the Lakes” as the largest ship operating on the Great Lakes until April 14, 1914. The vessel now known as the Museum Tug Ohio was originally used as a fire tug. Built in Chicago, IL by the Shipowner’s Dry Dock Company in 1903, the MFDS 15 was for use in Milwaukee along its busy waterfront. She housed three pumps made by the American Fire Pump Company of Seneca Falls, New York, that could spray 9,000 gallons of water per minute. She was 106 feet in length, and possessed a 26-foot beam.
