ASME and ISO Publish Joint Energy Assessment Standard for Pumping Systems

ASME, via its Industrial System Energy Assessment Supervisory Committee, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), via its Technical Committee 115/Working Group 7 - recently published a joint standard, ISO/ASME 14414, Pump System Energy Assessment. The standard aims to reduce energy consumption by enabling organizations to effectively determine the minimal amount of energy that is required by various pumping systems. ASME's EA-2 Energy Assessment for Pumping Systems standard was used as a basis in development of ISO/ASME 14414, which is the first standard the organizations have issued jointly.

ASME to Participate in the 2015 U.S.-China Oil & Gas Industry Forum

In September 2015 ASME will participate in the 2015 U.S.-China Oil & Gas Industry Forum (OGIF). The OGIF convenes business and government leaders from the petroleum and natural gas sectors of the United States and China in order to explore solutions to existing challenges and promote commercial oil and gas opportunities. ASME's Beijing Representative Office is working with the China Petroleum & Petro-Chemical Equipment Industry Association (CPEIA) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to potentially collocate the event with the China International Oil & Gas Technology Equipment Exhibition, which will be taking place in Chongqing. ASME is looking to contribute its knowledge and experience in the petroleum and natural gas sectors to this bilateral effort.

Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Subgroup on High Pressure Vessels Holds Meeting in Stockholm Sweden

From April 7-9, 2015, ASME Subgroup on High Pressure Vessels, of BPVC Section VIII Division 3, convened in Stockholm, Sweden. During the meeting, several topics from the subgroup's new Taskgroup on Subsea Applications were presented and discussed relative to the continued coordination with the American Petroleum Institute on High Pressure High Temperature Applications.

Subgroup on High Pressure Vessels (Section VIII Division 3) members on the Avure Technologies tour

On the margins of the meetings, the committee was invited to attend a tour of Avure Technologies, which demonstrated the use of advanced methods – including hot isostatic pressing of 3D printed parts – in equipment intended for high pressure applications. Holding meetings internationally helps the group maintain a significant amount of international members and ease difficulties in alignment of requirements in the pressure vessel codes with international users and other international requirements.

The group's next meeting will be held at the ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference in Boston, MA.

On June 11, 2015, ASME Standards & Certification will host a free webinar focused on some of the key technical challenges in additive manufacturing (also known as AM and 3D Printing) and the important role standards can play in helping to meet those challenges. The webinar will be led by Darrell Wallace, president of Assimilogic LLC, and Mike Vasquez, founder of 3Degrees. A more in-depth look at the standards landscape will take place during a panel session at ASME's Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing (AM3D) Conference & Expo taking place from August 2-5, 2015 in Boston, MA. The conference program will highlight issues and challenges associated with every step of the advanced manufacturing process.

ASME is one of a number of organizations currently investigating the role that standards and conformity assessment can play in helping to safely commercialize additive manufacturing technologies and processes. Most recently, ASME's newly established Y14 Subcommittee 46 on Dimensioning and Tolerancing for Additive Manufacturing held its first meeting on April 23rd, during a series of Y14 meetings in Kansas City, MO.  As a result of the meeting, four project teams were established which will initially focus on guidance and recommend practices for additive manufacturing, including: product definition; process; verification and validation; and data packaging.

For more information on the standards webinar and AM3D panel session, contact Marian Heller (+1.212.591.8514).

For more information on ASME's additive manufacturing standards activities, contact Donnie Alonzo (+1.212.591.8034).
