ASME has been publishing the ASME A17.4, Guide for Emergency
Personnel since 1972. This guide was originally developed as a result
of a demand from many building owners, lessees, and operating
managements needing guidance for the evacuation of passengers
from stalled elevator cars. Today it has evolved to provide guidance
for the evacuation of passengers from stalled elevator cars as well as
firefighters’ service operating procedures.
Significant revisions and updates have been made since the last
publication in 1999.
Key changes to this revision include:
- Rescue team organization and training;
- Evacuation procedures from elevator cars;
- Rescue following an earthquake;
- Elevator system lockdown;
- Firefighters’ service operating procedures (updated to 2010 edition of A17.1);
- Emergency/standby power operation.
A17.4 is to be used in conjunction with other volumes of ASME’s A17
series of safety standards. Careful application of these A17 safety
standards will help users to comply with applicable regulations within
their jurisdictions, while achieving the operational and safety benefits
to be gained from the many industry best-practices detailed within
these volumes.
Intended for building owners, lessees, and operating managements,
along with anyone engaged in the safety of elevators, escalators and
related conveyances.
