Graduating High School students are the next generation of engineers!

The ASME INSPIRE Program and the ASME Auxiliary offer scholarships to graduating High School seniors interested in pursuing engineering degrees.

Students must be enrolled full-time in an ABET- accredited* or substantially equivalent** mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology program, no later than the fall after their senior year in high school.

These awards will be for the first year of study (non-renewable).

There are two scholarship opportunities with their own specific requirements.

The ASME Auxiliary Lucy and Charles W.E. Clarke Scholarship - $7,000 each

Criteria
Student needs to be a graduating high school senior active on a FIRST FTC or FRC team.

A US citizen planning to enroll full-time in an ABET-accredited* or substantially equivalent** mechanical engineering in the United States, no later than the fall after their senior year in high school.

Students need to show they are active on a FIRST FTC or a FIRST FRC team.

This award will be for the first year of study (non-renewable) in an accredited* Mechanical Engineering program.

How to apply

Step 2: It will redirect to the online application where you will create a username and password for your account.

Step 3: Applicant should make sure to get a transcript (a record of grades) for the first semester of the senior year in high school from the school office.

Step 4: Find a Nominator who shall be an ASME member, ASME Auxiliary member, or ASME student member who is current with their ASME membership and dues. The Nominator shall attest to the student's technical, creative and leadership contributions to the FIRST team by answering questions on the application. This person’s email address is needed for the application because they will receive a link where they can nominate the student.

Step 5: Find a Recommender who is not your nominator, parent and/or relative. The Recommender shall attest to the student's technical, creative and leadership contributions to the FIRST Team by answering questions on the application. This person’s email address is needed for the application because they will receive a link where they can write their recommendation for the student.

Step 6: Complete all parts of the application that are required (indicated with a *) and make sure all necessary documents are uploaded, then click “Submit.”

Step 7: Check your account to verify all documents have been received and your application is in a “COMPLETED” status.

Supporting documents or information

Resume to include:

  • GPA
  • Job experience
  • A list of school and extracurricular activities
  • Any community service activities.

Transcript - with first semester high school senior grades including GPA (grade point average) will need to be uploaded.

FAFSA Student Aid Report

Financial Data – A list of resources and expenses will be required.

Check Disbursement
Scholarship checks shall be disbursed starting in mid-August and shall be payable directly to the student's educational institution. Checks may not be payable directly to the student.

Submission Requirement

The ASME INSPIRE/ Charles W.E. Clarke Scholarship - $2,000 each

Criteria
Student needs to be a graduating high school senior who intends to pursue an engineering degree or STEM-related studies.

Planning to enroll full-time in an ABET- accredited* or substantially equivalent** mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology program, no later than the fall after your senior year in high school.

Students need to show their involvement in STEM related activities.

Demonstrate family financial need in order to go to college.

This award will be for the first year of study (non-renewable) in an accredited* Mechanical Engineering program.

How to apply

Step 2: It will redirect to the online application where you will create a username and password for your account.

Step 4: Find a teacher/mentor who can verify the student's STEM activities and ask if they are willing to complete the recommendation section of the application. This person’s email address is needed for the application because they will receive a link where they can write their recommendation for the student.

Step 5: Complete all parts of the application that are required (indicated with a *) and make sure all necessary documents are uploaded, then click “Submit.”

Step 6: Check your account to verify all documents have been received and your application is in a “COMPLETED” status.

Student's Recommendation – This section of the application may not be written by a parent, friend or relative. The recommendation should attest to the student's technical, creative and leadership contributions in school as well as community and extracurricular activities.

Leadership Activities – information on your job experience and a list of school and extracurricular activities, honors and awards, and things that show leadership potential.

*The college the student is planning to attend must have a Mechanical Engineering (ME) program accredited by the Accreditation Board on Engineering Technology (ABET). Questions about whether a given program has received this accreditation may be answered by the college or university, or by checking listings on the ABET website (www.abet.org) or, for non-listed programs, contacting ASME.
 
**Substantially equivalent means that at least 25% of your courses would be from the Mechanical Engineering Department.
